Urupfu ntiruteguza...Bad New for Burundian Refugee(+) in Adelaide-Australia

Burundian Woman dies in house fire at Camden Park.

POLICE are using an interpreter to interview a man whose pregnant wife died in a fire in an Adelaide flat overnight.

Malaika Mkandale died inside the third-storey flat on Anzac Hwy at Camden Park after fire broke out just after 3am.

Neighbours in the block of flats across from Morphettville racecourse called firefighters after hearing exploding glass.

Ms Mkandale's husband, Luka Kageregere and two-year old son Joseph escaped the blaze but the 21-year old perished inside.

Chairman of the African Communities Council of SA, Dr Joseph Masika, said the couple had settled in well since moving to Adelaide in April last year.

"I know Luka and his wife Malaika, they are refugees from Burundi, they came through Melbourne and couldn't live there because they thought it was too big so they came to Adelaide," Dr Masika said.

"They were a very good couple, loving, sharing with other members of the community and they have been very good neighbours."

Dr Masika said Ms Mkandale was pregnant with the couple's second child and said she might have had trouble getting out of the flat.

He said police took Mr Kageregere to be interviewed with the assistance of an interpreter.

Neighbours said they heard glass exploding and a fire alarm but the burning flat and the one next door were engulfed in flames when 30 fire fighters arrived.

Resident Mr Milo Kuga, 20, said he saw smoke and flames blazing from the upstairs flat when he arrived home from New Year's Eve celebration.

"I starting knocking on doors and yelling `fire'," he said. "I did what I could."
