Jean-Claude Kavumbagu Reporter Behind

Bujumbura - Burundian authorities arrested a journalist on Thursday on a charge of defaming President Pierre Nkurunziza in a story about the cost of his recent trip to the Beijing Olympics.

Jean Claude Kavumbagu, who runs news agency Net Press, published an article last month saying the president and his entourage spent $100 000 visiting China.

But Burundian officials said that figure was exaggerated and demanded his prosecution. Kavumbagu was taken to a Bujumbura court, where he was sent to jail to await a further hearing.

"I don't see any charges that could justify the arrest of my client," his lawyer said. - Reuters
