Domitien Ndayizeye:
Ndayizeye was born on May 2, 1953 in Kayanza, Burundi. He was obliged to flee the country at the age of 19 to Belgium where he stayed until 1982. While in Exile in Belgium, he received a degree of industrial engineering. His political career also saw the sun: He was among the leaders of a movement of Burundian Hutu elite for the progress and the emancipation also know as MEPROBA. His role in this organization will continue after his coming back to Africa. While in Rwanda,he acted as a senior sales and technical manager in a Dutch Auto company. Meproba movement is seen by many as a precursor of the actual Democratic front of Burundi today known as Frodebu. However, it wasn't the only Hutu movement of the time. Ndayizeye assumed different responsibilities in Frodebu, and several government after its victory in 93.
In 1995, he was arrested and tortured by the government. He will be freed the following year. In 1997, he was again arrested and put to prison. In 2007, he will go back to prison again under the NKurunziza government.
In 2001, he was appointed interim president according to the Arusha peace deal. He was a man enough to accept defeat during the 2005 presidential election (by the Parliament). Since then, he is in the senate and was appointed by his party (Frodebu) as a presidential candidate for the up coming presidential election. (Facts provided by Ninde.org and Wikipedia)
OPINION:
As president, he failed to tackle the issue of poverty and corruption and was not friendly with free speech. One can recall the problem he had with a couple of private news organizations in the country. He also has failed to secure the borders of the nation as many Congolese were massacred on the Burundian soil. Although he ruled during a time where an armed Palipehutu was still in the bush, we did not assist to the kind of violence that we've seen during the current administration.
We wish Ndayizeye Domitien best of luck as he prepares himself to reconquer the presidential seat.
Our wish here is for all those who are sick and tired of the inability to lead of this administration to come together against the evil that they brought to our nation, so that an environment of peace and justice come back. So that those who have looted, killed and raped face justice: Only then will we be an independent nation.
