Burundi and Gabon at risk of importing intoxicated baby milk powder from China

APA – Beijing (China) Burundi and Gabon are at a very high risk of importing contaminated baby milk powder from China suspected of killing until Wednesday, three babies and intoxicating more than 6,244, APA learns from official sources in Beijing.

The tests conducted by the Chinese authorities showed that two producers of contaminated milk have been exporting baby formula milk powder to five countries which include Burundi and Gabon in Africa, Li Changjiang, head of the China Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said here in a press conference on Wednesday.

The quality watchdog tested samples of baby formula milk powder produced by 109 companies in China, and found melamine in 69 samples from 22 companies, and two of the 22 tested companies — Guangdong Yashili and Qingdao Suncare in east China’s Shandong Province — had exported products abroad meanly to Gabon and Burundi, he said.

According to Chinese officials, three babies are now dead after drinking melamine-contaminated milk powder, and a total of 6,244 infants are now confirmed sick, 158 from them suffered from acute kidney failure.

On Monday, officials said 1,253 children were ill and two had died after the country’s biggest baby milk powder maker, the Sanlu Group, last week revealed its products contained melamine, which can be used to bamboozle milk quality checks.

Most of the babies developed urinary problems, such as kidney stones. Melamine is a toxic chemical, banned in food. It is rich in nitrogen and was illegally added to raw milk for protein tests that register nitrogen levels.
