Burundian in Canada killed by her husband

WINDSOR, Ont. - A 57-year-old man was charged Saturday with the second-degree murder of his wife after the couple's children returned home from school Friday to find their mother slain.

Melkioro Gahungu was arrested by police shortly after the grisly discovery in a bedroom of the public housing unit where the family lived.

Dead is Maria Nzokilandevi, 53. The woman, Gahungu and their three children came to Canada last fall from Burundi.

Burkoski said police found a weapon at the scene. An autopsy was underway in London, Ont. Saturday afternoon to confirm the apparent cause of Nzokilandevi's death.

The mother was found dead by her two youngest children, one only kindergarten-aged, according to neighbours. After police arrived, the couple's oldest child, a teenaged boy, arrived home from high school.

Neighbours tended to the children until police contacted local service agencies. The children are being well cared for, Burkoski said.

Neighbours said the family of five moved into the public housing unit earlier this year. Burkoski said officers had difficulty communicating with Gahungu because he speaks little English
