The Burundi Minister of Energy and Mines, Samuel Ndayiragije, was sacked on Wednesday for 'serious dereliction of duty', official sources told PANA here.

According to a decree announcing his dismissal by President Pierre Nkurunziza, Burundi parliamentarians were already voting to punish Ndayiragije for unilaterally remitting money paid to Burundi by the Great Lakes international energy company (SINELAC).

The company, which is going through financial difficulties, supplies Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) with hydroelectric energy sources.

Ndayiragije's action is said to have caused the Burundi government a loss of abo ut US$ 37 million.

Following the action, Burundi has suffered an unprecedented energy crisis since 2008 and this has resulted in power cuts which have paralysed all sectors of the economy and made live difficult for most Burundians.
